WAH CANTT: Drug addiction has become a serious problem around the world. It would not be wrong to say it has been become a life style in both rich and poor countries. The use of drugs and alcohol not only negatively impacts moral values but damages a nation’s economy.

In Pakistan, drug addiction is getting worse. The number of drug users has increased exponentially in the last few decades. Pakistan has one of the high numbers of four million drug addicts.

The question is why have people started to resort to drugs this much? Many claim it is mostly because of socio-psychological factors, economic issues, lack of interest in education, high stress and anxiety. People start from smoking tobacco and ruin their life by jumping on hard drugs. Children who grow up in families where smoking is common have high chances of smoking tobacco very early on. They will also be more willing to try hard drugs and get involve in wrong practices. Drug addiction is also increasing in educational institutions across Pakistan. Students, whether in schools, colleges or universities, are getting addicted to these substances. Students try and find a way to escape the reality that becomes unbearable for them and so they take to drugs. It gives them a temporary relief and they soon become dependent on it.

The problem can be solved by educating everyone. Everyone should know about the consequences of it. Teachers should educate students on how to avoid it and how to manage stress. I request the government to take serious steps towards this issue and make strict laws in this regard.
