The market is saturated when it comes to vitamins and supplements all promising amazing hair improvements. Sadly, some companies use cheap ingredients and exaggerations to promote placebo products. So what is the most valuable ingredient among the power players? It seems it’s an ancient herb known as horsetail which is a venerable plant thought to contain magical properties due to its effectiveness and anti-inflammatory effects. But what do the studies say of this herb?

Although the evidence is primarily anecdotal, a few scientific studies indicate horsetail may help promote hair growth based on its silicon content, impact on collagen and antioxidant properties.

Some proponents of natural remedies suggest that the silica in horsetail extract makes it a good hair care product.

In a study with Dermatology Research and Practice, a three-month double-blind placebo-controlled study investigated this further.

The study concluded that taking oral tablets including horsetail, helped improve hair strength and growth.

Many advocates for horsetail use for hair growth suggest its impact on collagen and calcium for bone regeneration  which is beneficial for hair health.

In a study with General Medicine: Open Access, it concluded that the silicon in horsetail offers an enhanced biosynthesis of collagen that may improve the formation of cartilage and bone tissue.

Maxine Laceby, founder and CEO of Absolute Collagen said: “Collagen is known to have a wide range of health benefits.

“Hair follicles and nail beds contain collagen that gives hair and nails their strength, and collagen deficiency can be a key cause for brittle nails and dry, weak hair.

“Adding collagen to your diet can help rejuvenate the health of your hair, as well as help to grow faster.”

Components of horsetail extract show the strong antioxidant properties the herb contains which is helpful for hair health.

In a study with the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health, the impact of oxidative stress on hair was investigated.

The study noted: “With age, production of free radicals increases, while the endogenous defence mechanisms decrease.

“This imbalance leads to progressive damage of cellular structures, presumably resulting in the ageing phenotype.

“While the role of oxidative stress has been widely discussed in skin ageing, little focus has been placed on its impact on hair condition.

“Moreover, most literature on age-related hair changes focuses on alopecia, but its equally important that the hair fibres that emerge from the scalp exhibit significant age-related changes that have equal impact on the overall cosmetic properties of hair.”

Taking horsetail supplements helps to reduce free radicals which causes damage to hair follicles, especially in older people.

The anti-inflammatory effects and antioxidants in horsetail for hair have proven to be extremely potent, making horsetail extract for hair a prized winner.

There are many reasons as to why professionals recommend horsetail extract as a natural treatment for thinning hair.

Horsetail extract is rich in minerals for hair.

Horsetail vitamins for hair growth’s principal ingredient is the mineral silica, which helps strengthen hair strands, as well as nails and bones.
