MANILA—Sen. Panfilo Lacson on Saturday said the entry of foreign garbage and illegal drugs into the country will not stop as long as there’s corruption in the Bureau of Customs.

“As long as fictitious consignees and unscrupulous brokers continue to work with corrupt customs officials, tons of garbage and shabu will enter our country’s ports. All, including garbage and shabu are toxic and should be treated as such,” he said in a tweet.

In March, the justice department indicted former officials of the BOC, Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency, and the Philippine National Police over the multi-billion peso shabu shipment that slipped past authorities after being hidden inside magnetic lifters.

Last Wednesday, P1 billion worth of illegal narcotics from Cambodia were seized at a warehouse in Malabon, the latest in a series of shipment busts.

Authorities have warned that the country is being used as a “transshipment point” of illegal drugs after bulks of cocaine were recovered along coastal areas.

Meanwhile, the Philippines is set to return garbage from Hong Kong shipped to Misamis Oriental, the latest in a string of trash shipments to the country following those from Australia, Canada, and South Korea.
