Shh! Anti-agers no one but you need know about: Which teeth whitening treatments really work?
- An anonymous reader asked Inge van Lotringen for advice on teeth whitening
- British beauty expert referred to Philips Zoom whitening by Dr Rhona Eskander
- Treatment involves the dentist making custom-moulded trays for around £300
Q: I’m 72 and want to get my teeth whitened. But a friend who had it done had disappointing results. What are the pitfalls?
A: Professional teeth whitening in the UK is strictly regulated, with very little risk of damage or sensitivity, and the results can brighten your whole face.
But some people are better candidates than others. ‘If your enamel is thin, which can be genetic or can happen with age, the yellow-tinted dentine inside your teeth will show through more and your teeth won’t end up as white,’ says dentist Dr Rhona Eskander (sw1dentalstudio.co.uk).

Dr Eskander likes Philips Zoom whitening (available at dentists nationwide), where the dentist makes custom-moulded trays (to ensure even whitening and protect your gums), which you then inject with a 6 per cent hydrogen peroxide gel and wear daily for an hour for two weeks. It costs around £300.
For another £300, you can turbo-boost the results in-clinic, where your mouth gets strapped to a whitening lamp for (not the most comfortable) 45 minutes, to intensify the bleaching. This is really only useful when you have bad stains; the at-home option is pretty effective in itself.
I love my bright results, but my teeth didn’t get half as blinding as my ‘Zoomed’ colleague, who had far less skinny enamel.
So consider this with the help of your dentist, who will also be able to offer alternatives.
